What is a pantomogram?
A pantomogram is a panoramic X-ray image that utilizes X-ray radiation. It allows simultaneous imaging of the teeth, maxilla, mandible, most of the maxillary sinuses, hard palate, and temporomandibular joints.
Is a pantomogram safe? Yes. The radiation dose used during this scan is only slightly higher than that of a standard intraoral periapical X-ray, ranging between 7 and 12 µSv; for comparison, the natural background radiation dose absorbed daily in Poland is around 6.8 µSv. Whether the scan is safe for a specific patient is determined by the physician issuing the referral.
When to get a pantomogram?
Indications for this type of examination can vary. Patients may be referred for a pantomogram when experiencing pain symptoms, but it is also necessary for many types of dental treatments and diagnostics. Panoramic X-rays are most commonly performed in cases such as:
How to prepare for a pantomogram examination?
Although no special preparation is required, before the scan you must remove any metal-containing objects from the head and neck area, such as jewelry, piercings, glasses, removable dentures or orthodontic appliances, hairpins, or hair ties with metal connectors. Metal (including precious metal) appears so clearly on a pantomogram image that it could obstruct the examined structures.
Pantomogram - what does the examination look like?
The examination itself takes about 15 seconds. Before starting, the radiographer places a single-use protective sleeve over a reusable bite block with special grooves and instructs the patient to fit their upper and lower incisors ("front teeth") into them.
Next, the patient assumes an upright posture, reaches forward, and holds the machine handles in the designated area. During positioning, the radiographer may ask for a wide smile, and then to close the mouth for the scan, press the tongue against the palate, and swallow saliva. Throughout the entire scan, the patient must remain completely still.
Just a few minutes after the scan, the patient receives the result on a CD or flash drive. Results can also be downloaded from the DIAGDENT Patient Portal. To learn more about obtaining test results, click here.
The most important part of the examination is following the radiographer's instructions. The procedure description may vary slightly depending on individual cases.
